ষষ্ঠ শতকের মধ্যে বাংলার পূর্ব প্রান্ত পর্যন্ত বৈদিক ধর্ম ও সংস্কৃতির বিস্তার লাভ করে । সপ্তম শতকে সমতটের ত্রিপুরা জেলায় জঙ্গল কেটে চতুর্বেদী ব্রাহ্মণরা বসতি স্থাপন করে । গুপ্ত রাজারা তাঁদের ধর্ম কর্ম ও জীবিকা নির্বাহের জন্য ভূমিদান করেছেন । সাধারণতঃ পুণ্য অর্জন করার জন্য তাঁদেরকে ভূমিদান করা হত । সুত্রঃ রাষ্ট্র ও সংস্কৃতি (বাংলাদেশ এশিয়াটিক সোসাইটি)।
