কম্পিউটারে কোন কাজ করতে হলে নির্দিষ্ট কোন সফটওয়্যারের সাহায্য নিতে হয়। যেমন: লেখালেখি, ছবি সম্পাদনা অথবা গানশোনা ইত্যাদি কাজের জন্য বিভিন্ন সফটওয়্যার ব্যবহার করা হয়। তেমনি ইন্টারনেট ব্যবহারের জন্য বিশেষ ধরনের সফটওয়্যার প্রয়োজন পড়ে, যা “ওয়েব ব্রাউজার” নামে পরিচিত। অর্থাৎ, যে সফটওয়্যার দ্বারা আমরা ইন্টারনেট ব্যবহার করতে পারি, তাকে ওয়েব ব্রাউজার বলে। “মোজাইক”(Mosaic) প্রথম জনপ্রিয় ওয়েব ব্রাউজার। এটি ১৯৯৩ সালে তৈরি হয়। বর্তমানে “মজিলা ফায়ারফক্স” (Mozilla Firefox), “ইন্টারনেট এক্সপ্লোরার” (Internet Explorar), “সাফারি” (Safari), “গুগল ক্রাম” (Google Crome) ও ওপেরা (Opera) জনপ্রিয় ওয়েব ব্রাউজার। ব্যবহারকারীদের সুবিধা অসুবিধা বিবেচনা করে, ওয়েব ব্রাউজার গুলো নিয়মিত সংস্কারণ করতেছে।
