Kazi Nazrul Islam, the National Poet of Bangladesh, was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1976 during the inaugural year of the award. He received this highest state award for his extraordinary contribution to Bengali literature and music, and for inspiring the nation during the Liberation War with his revolutionary writings.
