সুদ (Interest): ব্যাংকে বা ব্যবসায়ে যে টাকা খাটানো হয় তার পরিমাণ এবং সময়ের ওপর নির্ভর করে নির্দিষ্ট হারে যে অতিরিক্ত টাকা পাওয়া যায় তাই সুদ।

আসল বা মূলধন(Principal or Capital): যে টাকা গচ্ছিত রাখা হয় বা ধার দেয়া হয় বা খাটানো হয়, তাকে আসল বা মূলধন বলে।

সুদাসল (Amount/Interest Principal /Increased Principal): সুদ এবং আসলের টাকাকে একত্রে সুদ-মূল বা সুদাসল বলে।

সুদের হার (Rate of Interest): কোন নির্দিষ্ট টাকার ওপর কোন নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের জন্য যে সুদ দেয়া হয় তাই সুদের হার। সুদের হার সাধারণত একশ টাকার ওপর এক বছরের জন্য ধরা হয়ে থাকে, তাকে শতকরা বার্ষিক সুদের হার বলে।

সুদের শ্রেণীবিভাগ (Classification of interest): সুদ সাধারণত দুই প্রকার :

                     ১। সরল সুদ

                     ২। চক্রবৃদ্ধি সুদ

সরল সুদ (Simple Interest): কেবল আসল বা মূলধনের ওপর যে সুদ হিসাব করা হয় তাই সরল সুদ।

চক্রবৃদ্ধি সুদ (Compound Interest): নির্দিষ্ট সময়ান্তে উদ্ভূত সুদাসলকে ধরে আসল পরবর্তী নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের জন্য তার ওপর সুদ নির্ধারণ করা হয় যে সুদে তাকে চক্রবৃদ্ধি সুদ বলে।
